Patios, driveways, walls and pool decks for Avon homes and businesses, planned around septic systems, well-protection rules and the town’s online permits.

Hardscape Planned Around Avon’s Septic Systems and Water Supply

Avon covers about four and a half square miles, which makes it one of the smallest towns in eastern Massachusetts. Most of it has no public sewer, so nearly every yard has a septic tank and a leach field somewhere under the lawn. That shapes where a patio, a pool or a wider driveway can go more than any design preference does.

CJ Pickering Enterprises is based in South Easton, a few miles south of Avon. We build patios, paver driveways, retaining walls and walkways and steps for homes, and offer asphalt paving and snow and ice management for commercial properties such as those in the Avon Industrial Park and Merchants Park.

Planning a Project in Avon

Find the Septic System Before You Draw the Patio

With so little of Avon on sewer, the first question on any backyard job is where the tank, the distribution box and the leach field sit. Nothing heavy can be built on them, and machines and loaded trucks should stay off them during construction.

The Board of Health is the place to ask about septic records for your address. Bring whatever plan you have to our first visit and the layout can start in the right spot.

Wetlands: 25 Feet Untouched, 35 Feet Before You Build

Avon has its own wetlands bylaw, and the Conservation Commission’s rules under it are tighter than the state’s. They set a 25-foot strip beside a wetland where nothing is disturbed, and a 35-foot line before anything is constructed.

Avon sits at the top of its watersheds, so the streams are small: Beaver Brook and Trout Brook, which drain toward the Taunton River. If your yard backs onto either one, or onto low wet ground, talk to the Conservation Commission before you settle on a location.

Well Protection Limits How Much You Can Pave

Much of Avon lies in the Water Supply Protection District, a zoning overlay that covers the Trout Brook and Beaver Brook watersheds and the land that recharges the town’s wells. Inside it, a use that makes more than 15 percent of a lot or 2,500 square feet impervious, whichever is larger, needs a special permit.

A long driveway plus a large patio and a pool deck can reach that figure on a modest lot. Permeable pavers and smaller footprints are worth discussing early if you are close to it.

Permits Are Filed Online

Avon no longer takes paper building permit applications. They go through the town’s PermitEyes portal, and the town’s permit page lists the forms.

A swimming pool 18 inches deep or more needs a permit from the Inspector of Buildings, and the town code calls for an enclosure at least four feet high with self-latching gates. Plan the fence line along with the pool deck, not after it.

Town rules change. We last checked these against Avon’s own pages in October 2026, so confirm with the town before you build.

Avon Project FAQs

Avon, MA: Can I put a patio over part of my septic system in Avon?

No. A patio, pool or driveway has to stay off the tank, the distribution box and the leach field, and the system has to stay reachable for pumping and repair. Most Avon homes are on septic, so we locate the system first and design around it.

Avon, MA: Does a new patio or driveway in Avon need a stormwater permit?

Usually not. Avon’s stormwater bylaw applies to land disturbance of one acre or more, which is far larger than a typical residential job. The limits that more often matter are the wetlands setbacks and, in the Water Supply Protection District, the cap on impervious surface.

Avon, MA: Is there ledge under Avon yards?

Sometimes. The town’s open space plan describes most of Avon as glacial till or shallow bedrock, with sand and gravel in the southeast and wet ground between. What is under your yard decides how deep the base goes and how water is carried away, so it is one of the first things we look at.
