Serving Whitman, MA

Hardscape & Paving Contractor in Whitman, MA

Driveways, patios, walkways and pool decks for Whitman’s compact, built-out neighborhoods.

Improving the Yard You Have in Whitman

Whitman is about seven square miles, the second smallest town in Plymouth County, and it is nearly full. The town’s own planning work found only 58 acres of buildable vacant residential land left, so almost every project here improves a property that already exists: a tired driveway rebuilt, a back step replaced, a patio added where the lawn never grew well.

CJ Pickering Enterprises serves Whitman from South Easton, by way of Brockton. We install paver driveways, patios, walkways and steps and pool decks, and pave asphalt driveways and lots.

Planning a Project in Whitman

Mostly on Sewer

Unlike several of its neighbors, Whitman has a town sewer system that serves about 6,000 homes and sends its wastewater to Brockton for treatment. For most yards that removes the septic system from the planning.

It is still worth confirming for your address. If your home is one of the few on septic, the tank and leaching field decide where a patio or pool can go.

Pools Sit Outside the Coverage Limit

Whitman’s zoning caps lot coverage by structures at 25 percent in the residential districts, and says outright that the limit does not apply to swimming pools. A pool does have to be at least 10 feet from the side and rear property lines, 10 feet from the house and 35 feet from the front line.

A pool able to hold 24 inches of water or more needs a building permit and an electrical permit. A detached accessory building has to stay 10 feet from the lot lines and the house, and may cover no more than a quarter of the required rear yard.

One Hundred Feet From the River and the Brook

The Shumatuscacant River runs through the middle of Whitman, with Hobart Meadow and Bear Meadow along it, and Meadow Brook crosses the town as well. Zoning has a Watershed Protection district covering 100 feet back from their banks and tributaries, alongside the mapped floodplain.

The Conservation Commission administers the state wetlands law here. Work within 100 feet of a wetland needs its review.

Driveway Aprons and Online Permits

Digging up a street, sidewalk or public way, which is what rebuilding a driveway apron involves, needs a written permit from Public Works, and the surface has to be restored to its satisfaction.

Building permits are filed through the town’s online permitting system. Homeowners can file building and electrical permits themselves.

Town rules change. We last checked these against Whitman’s own pages in October 2026, so confirm with the town before you build.

Whitman Project FAQs

Whitman, MA: Can I park on the street overnight in Whitman in winter?

No. Whitman bans overnight street parking from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., December 1 through April 1, and cars that interfere with plowing can be towed. On small lots that makes every driveway space count, and widening a driveway is often possible within the setbacks.

Whitman, MA: Does a pool count toward lot coverage in Whitman?

No. The 25 percent limit counts structures and the zoning bylaw says it does not apply to swimming pools. The pool still has to meet its setbacks: 10 feet from the side and rear lines and the house, and 35 feet from the front property line.

Whitman, MA: What are the snow rules for Whitman businesses?

The owner or occupant of a business property has to clear the abutting sidewalk to four feet wide within the first three daylight hours after snow stops. Plowing or shoveling snow onto a sidewalk, street or public way is also prohibited, with fines that rise for repeat offenses.
