Hardscape & Paving Contractor in Wellesley, MA

Retaining walls, pool decks, plunge pools and patios for Wellesley homes, designed to the town’s detailed bylaws for walls, pools and driveways.

Wellesley Has Rules for Walls, Pools and Driveways. We Design to Them.

Few towns regulate outdoor construction as closely as Wellesley. It has a bylaw for retaining walls, another for swimming pools, a tree bylaw, a written policy for driveway aprons and its own wetlands rules. None of that prevents a good project. It does mean the design has to be right on paper before anyone digs.

From the Fells to the Falls, CJ Pickering Enterprises builds retaining walls, pool decks, plunge pools and patios in Wellesley, and works in natural stone. The hills here, steepest south of the railroad, are where walls and terraces do the most good.

Planning a Project in Wellesley

Retaining Walls: 4 Feet, 7 Feet and 15 Feet

A wall that holds back four feet or more of soil needs a building permit, and the Design Review Board weighs in at seven feet. Walls four feet or taller have to stay 10 feet from a property line, and none may exceed 15 feet without a special permit.

Terraces count as separate walls only if they are spaced at least twice the height of the taller one. The tree bylaw applies to walls covered by this section, so the trees near the wall line belong on the plan.

Pool Setbacks and a Six-Foot Barrier

No part of a pool may be within 30 feet of a street. At the sides and rear, the setback is four times the pool’s height above grade at the nearest lot line, never less than 10 feet or more than 30. A pool set at grade does not count as building coverage.

Wellesley asks for a fence or barrier at least six feet tall with self-latching gates, in a type and place the Building Inspector accepts. That is taller than most towns require.

Driveway Aprons Belong to the Town Engineer

The driveway apron policy requires the Town Engineer’s written approval for any new or altered apron or curb cut. A single driveway may be no more than 12 feet wide at the property line, and a double no more than 20.

The apron inside the public way must be asphalt or cement concrete. Brick pavers, cobblestones and stone may be used on your own land, starting eight feet beyond the edge of the road.

Twenty-Five Feet at Water and Wetlands

Wellesley’s wetlands regulations set a 25-foot No Disturbance Zone around ponds, banks and wetlands, isolated ones included. Beyond that line but inside the 100-foot buffer, turning existing lawn into a patio or driveway is normally handled with a simpler filing.

Morses Pond, Lake Waban, Fuller Brook and the Charles River put many lots within reach of these rules. Projects with 400 square feet or more of soil disturbance in the regulated area need a full Notice of Intent.

Town rules change. We last checked these against Wellesley’s own pages in October 2026, so confirm with the town before you build.

Wellesley Project FAQs

Wellesley, MA: How close to my lot line can a retaining wall go in Wellesley?

A wall under four feet has more freedom. At four feet or taller it has to be 10 feet from the property line and needs a building permit. Two shorter terraced walls are treated as separate walls only when they are spaced at least twice the height of the taller one.

Wellesley, MA: Can I have a paver apron at the street in Wellesley?

No. The part of the driveway inside the public way has to be asphalt or cement concrete, and changing it needs the Town Engineer’s approval. Pavers can begin eight feet in from the edge of the road, on your own property.

Wellesley, MA: Are homes in Wellesley on sewer?

Nearly all of them. The town’s sewer ties into the MWRA system, and its open space plan counted 203 properties still on septic. If yours is one, tell us at the start, because the system has to be located before a pool or patio is placed.
