Hardscape & Paving Contractor in Weston, MA

Natural stone, retaining walls, patios and pool decks for Weston properties, where every home is on septic and stone walls line the scenic roads.

Stone and Hardscape for Weston’s Large, Wooded Lots

Weston calls itself semi-rural, and it earns the description: about 2,000 acres of conservation land, some 90 miles of trails, and narrow, winding roads lined with old stone walls. Lots are large, between 20,000 and 60,000 square feet depending on the district, and every house is on its own septic system.

Projects here tend to be about fitting new work into an established landscape. CJ Pickering Enterprises travels from South Easton to build in natural stone and to install retaining walls, patios and pool decks in Weston.

Planning a Project in Weston

No Sewer, and Septic Rules Stricter Than the State’s

The Board of Health reports that every residential property in Weston uses an individual septic system. Its regulations go beyond the state’s Title 5 because much of the town drains to Cambridge’s drinking water supply.

Under those rules no foundation may be within 20 feet of a leaching facility or 10 feet of a septic tank. See the town’s septic page and have your system located before a wall or pool is designed.

A Wall Becomes a Structure at 36 Inches

Weston’s zoning treats a retaining wall 36 inches or more above natural grade as a structure, and measures stepped walls together. A wall under 36 inches is not one. Structures have to meet the setbacks, which run from 20 to 45 feet from a lot line depending on the district.

Patios and driveways are not structures under the bylaw. Swimming pools are, and the setback is measured from the pool plus a five-foot apron at the water’s edge.

New Paving and the Stormwater By-Law

Weston’s stormwater by-law works in steps. Up to 750 square feet of new impervious area needs no permit. From 750 to 2,500 square feet takes a Minor permit, and more than 2,500 square feet, or more than 5,000 square feet of land disturbance, a Major one. Repairing an existing driveway needs none.

A good-sized patio falls in the Minor range, so its drainage should be designed along with it.

Scenic Roads and Recently Paved Streets

Weston lists about three dozen scenic roads. On them, removing a tree or changing a stone wall in the right-of-way needs a permit, which matters for any new or widened driveway opening.

Public Works also bars cutting into a road in the year it is repaved and for two years after, except in emergencies. Check both before planning a new apron. Work within 100 feet of wetlands or ponds goes through the town’s wetlands permit process.

Town rules change. We last checked these against Weston’s own pages in October 2026, so confirm with the town before you build.

Weston Project FAQs

Weston, MA: Do patios have to meet setbacks in Weston?

No. Weston’s zoning does not treat patios or driveways as structures, so the structure setbacks do not apply to them. Pools, decks, pergolas and retaining walls 36 inches or taller are structures and do have to meet them.

Weston, MA: Can I alter the stone wall along my road frontage in Weston?

If your road is one of the town’s scenic roads and the wall is in the right-of-way, you need a permit first. Most of the roads people think of as classic Weston are on that list. We can rebuild or extend a wall to match once the permit is in hand.

Weston, MA: Does Weston have a winter parking ban?

No. The town does not impose one, and asks residents to keep cars off the street during storms. Its by-laws do ban pushing snow or ice onto public ways and sidewalks, and tickets can go to the plow contractor, the owner or both.
