Serving Natick, MA

Hardscape & Paving Contractor in Natick, MA

Patios, walkways, pool decks and walls for Natick homes, from the lots around Lake Cochituate to the old village in South Natick.

Hardscape for the Place of Hills

The name Natick means place of hills, and the ground lives up to it: drumlins like Pleasant Hill and Carver Hill, bedrock that breaks the surface in places, and between them a chain of water that runs from Lake Cochituate through Fisk Pond and Dug Pond to the Charles River. Water and wetlands cover about 13.5 percent of the town.

CJ Pickering Enterprises serves Natick from South Easton. We build patios, walkways and steps, pool decks and retaining walls, and work in natural stone where a yard calls for it.

Planning a Project in Natick

Two Wetland Lines: 25 Feet and 40 Feet

Natick’s wetlands bylaw sets a 25-foot No Disturbance Zone and a 40-foot No Build Zone from every wetland resource area. That is tighter than the state’s rule: no clearing within 25 feet, and no sheds or other structures within 40.

Across the full 100-foot buffer, the Conservation Commission presumes that work harms the wetland unless the applicant shows otherwise. With this much water in town, check your lot early.

A Pool Starts at the Board of Health

In Natick the pool permit comes from the Board of Health first, with a separate fence permit from the Building Department. The health regulations keep a residential pool at least 10 feet from side and rear lot lines and foundations, and 20 feet from any part of a private septic system.

They also require a permanent fence at least five feet high, and the pool may not be filled until the enclosure has been inspected and approved. The deck and the fence line should be drawn together.

Sand in One Yard, Ledge in the Next

The town’s open space plan says well-drained, sandy Hinckley soils cover almost half of Natick. The drumlin hills are a mix of glacial material, and bedrock outcrops are common, the largest around Indian Brook, Dug Pond and Everett Hill.

That means two houses a mile apart can need very different excavation. A test hole tells us whether a wall footing or a pool will meet sand, hardpan or rock.

Driveway Widths and Historic Districts

Natick’s zoning sets the width of a one- or two-family driveway: 9 to 21 feet at the right-of-way line, and 13 to 25 feet at the curb. Street opening and driveway permits run through the town’s online permitting.

In the John Eliot Historic District in South Natick and the Henry Wilson district along West Central Street, changes to the outside of a building or its grounds need the Historic District Commission’s approval.

Town rules change. We last checked these against Natick’s own pages in October 2026, so confirm with the town before you build.

Natick Project FAQs

Natick, MA: How tall does a pool fence have to be in Natick?

Five feet. The Board of Health requires a permanent fence at least five feet high with self-closing, self-latching gates, built within 30 days of the pool going in. That is a foot taller than the common four-foot rule, so confirm it before ordering fence panels.

Natick, MA: Is my Natick home on sewer?

Probably, but not certainly. Natick’s sewers connect to the MWRA system, yet the town says many homes are still on septic and have not tied in. If yours is one of them, a pool has to stay 20 feet from every part of the system.

Natick, MA: Can I file a Natick building permit on paper?

No. The Building Department has taken applications only through its online portal since May 2022. It keeps public kiosks at Town Hall for anyone who needs one.
