Patios, pool decks, driveways and walls for Bridgewater homes, from the sewered streets downtown to the septic lots near Lake Nippenicket.

Outdoor Living for Bridgewater, From Downtown to Lake Nippenicket

Bridgewater is where the Town River and the Matfield River meet to form the Taunton River, and water sets the terms for building here. The land is low, with only about 165 feet between the river and the top of Sprague’s Hill, and the town’s own plans describe tight glacial soils and scattered wetlands, especially in the south and west.

From our base in South Easton we build patios, pool decks, paver driveways and retaining walls across Bridgewater. On ground like this, the base under the pavers and the path the water takes off them matter as much as the stone you choose.

Planning a Project in Bridgewater

Sewer Downtown, Septic Almost Everywhere Else

The town’s wastewater plan says public sewer reaches only about one third of developed properties: downtown and the neighborhoods around it, Route 104, parts of Route 18 and the university campus. The rest of Bridgewater is on septic.

If you are on septic, the tank and leach field decide where a patio or pool can sit. The Health Department can tell you what is on file for your lot.

One Hundred Feet From Water

Under Bridgewater’s wetlands bylaw, building on or altering land within 100 feet of a wetland, bank, pond or stream needs the Conservation Commission’s approval first. That takes in a lot of yards near Lake Nippenicket, Carver’s Pond and the rivers.

The west side of town, beyond Pine Street, also lies inside the Hockomock Swamp Area of Critical Environmental Concern. Work is still possible there, but it gets a closer review, so allow time for it.

Driveway Rules at the Street

Bridgewater limits a residential driveway to 18 feet wide where it crosses from the gutter line to the edge of the town’s right-of-way, unless the highway superintendent allows more. The first six feet have to be graded at least six inches above the gutter, so street water stays in the street.

Work in a public sidewalk or street needs a written permit from the Highway Division. A wider parking court is still possible; it just has to widen out after the driveway clears the right-of-way.

When a Bigger Project Triggers a Review

The town’s stormwater ordinance calls for a Land Disturbance Review once a job disturbs 5,000 square feet, and a permit above half an acre. A patio alone rarely gets there, but a pool, a deck around it, new lawn grading and a driveway together can.

Building permits go through the town’s PermitEyes portal, and the Building Department asks that the permit card be in hand before work starts.

Town rules change. We last checked these against Bridgewater’s own pages in October 2026, so confirm with the town before you build.

Bridgewater Project FAQs

Bridgewater, MA: How wide can my driveway be in Bridgewater?

At the street, 18 feet. The town’s limit applies from the gutter line to the edge of the right-of-way, and a wider opening needs the highway superintendent’s approval. Past that point the driveway can widen for parking or a turnaround.

Bridgewater, MA: My yard in Bridgewater stays wet in spring. Can it still have a patio?

Often, yes, if the patio is built for it. Much of Bridgewater is low and drains slowly, so the base, the pitch of the surface and where the runoff goes are designed first. If the wet area is a wetland, the Conservation Commission has to approve work within 100 feet of it.

Bridgewater, MA: Where can I put snow from my Bridgewater driveway?

On your own property. The town’s code forbids pushing snow from a driveway or apron so that it blocks a sidewalk or a town way, and vehicles that get in the way of plowing can be towed. It is worth planning a spot for snow when the driveway is laid out.
